Kenya Airways opens direct route to connect Vietnam with Africa

Kenya Airways has become the first African carrier to fly non-stop to Vietnam by opening a direct route between Kenya’s capital Nairobi and Hanoi on Tuesday.

A source from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam said Kenya Airways will provide three weekly flights from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Noi Bai International Airport with Boeing aircraft, local media reported.

The airline is charging promotion fares of US$699 a round tickets in economy class and $2,362 for business class.

The non-stop route is expected to cut the travel time to around nine hours, saving passengers more than four hours of transit in Thailand’s capital Bangkok.

Mbuvi Ngunze, CEO of Kenya Airways, said at the launching ceremony in Hanoi that Vietnam has become a new destination in the region for African businesses.

He said there has been big attention to the new route, like from Angola which started to receive workers from Vietnam in early 2014.

Representatives of Kenya Airways expected that Hanoi being its 52nd destination will raise the revenue contribution from Asian market to 10 percent. The carrier is making around $1.1 billion a year.

Kenya Airways is cooperating with Vietnam Airlines, a co-member of SkyTeam alliance, with plan to expand service to Ho Chi Minh City and other Asian countries including Japan, China, Malaysia and South Korea.

Jaspanan to grant Vietnam $1bn in aid for spanower, traffic develospanment

Vietnam will receive US$1 billion from Japan in official development assistance (ODA) loans to fund seven power, infrastructure, education, and environment projects.

The diplomatic note on the grant was signed by Vietnamese Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh and Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Hiroshi Fukada in Hanoi on Tuesday.

The loan, which is meant for the 2014 fiscal year, is ready for disbursement within 2015, according to the agreement. The 2014 fiscal year began on April 1 last year and concluded on March 31 this year.

The ODA grant is intended to help Vietnam implement seven projects, including the construction of the 9.87 billion yen ($82.5 million) Thai Binh 1 thermal power plant in the northern province of Thai Binh and a 29.78 billion yen ($249 million) power distribution network.

About 14.91 billion yen and 1.06 billion yen from the grant will be earmarked for two power supply systems, in the southern province of Dong Nai and the northern city of Ha Long, respectively.

A project to build the north-to-south expressway part that connects Ben Luc District in the southern province of Long An and Long Thanh District in Dong Nai will get funding worth 31.32 billion yen from the ODA loan.

Another 15 billion yen will be granted to stage five of the national climate change resilience program, whereas 10.45 billion yen will be used to improve the training and scientific research ability of Can Tho University, located in the eponymous city in the Mekong Delta.

Japan has provided Vietnam with ODA loans for the past 20 years and the latest grant proves that the assistance is not only meant for traffic infrastructure development but also for other fields such as education, Ambassador Fukada said at the signing ceremony.

Minister Vinh appreciated Japan’s support over the last two decades, saying the Japanese ODA has contributed greatly to developing infrastructure in Vietnam as well as boosting its growth.

Vietnam respects the aid and hopes to receive more ODA from the Japanese government in the future, the minister said.

The Southeast Asian country and Japan are slated to work on the list of projects that will be funded by Japanese official assistance for the 2015 fiscal year during Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s visit to the East Asian country in July, according to the Vietnamese government’s website.

Japan is Vietnam’s largest ODA provider. The East Asian country has granted more than 2 billion yen in ODA loans to Vietnam since 1992.

Forty-three percent of the grants are earmarked for traffic infrastructure development, while environment and healthcare projects receive 15 percent of the total loans.

Exploring the longest cave in Southeast Asia

A group of Japanese and Vietnamese scientists discovered the astonishing cave, which was formed hundreds of years ago and winds more than 1,000 meters long in the Chu B’luk volcanic cave system considered as the longest of its kind in Southeast Asia.

An eight-kilometer small path in Dray Sap Forest leads to the cave that looks like the mouth of a volcano. To go inside the 18-meter-deep cave, we had to use a rope ladder and spent thrilling moments on the swaying ladder before stepping on a basalt rock deep in the cave. With flashlights and a 1,000-watt lamp lighted by an electricity generator at the entrance of the cave, we started our thrilling journey in C7.

The passage in the cave is wide enough for us to stroll but it is quite dark. Sometimes, we had to nervously climb on and walk by rocks which fell from the roof of the cave but the reward for us was the fanciful light beams shinning down through a hole from the roof. The cave is split into two small caves deep inside with the 20-meter-wide, 15-meter-high part in the west featuring sinuous patterns and colorful stalactites.

Walking 200 meters further into the cave, we met dark red lava layers and stones. There, we had to bend down to get through to continue our journey until we saw a large number of bats. This is the reason why C7 Cave is commonly known among locals as “bat cave”.

Vietnam tourism numbers plummet as Chinese, Russians keep away

Foreign arrivals in Vietnam fell for the 10 straight month in March, which also recorded the biggest year-on-year drop of 23.4 percent.

Figures from the General Statistics Office show that foreign visitor numbers dropped to around 543,000 in March, nearly 30 percent fewer than in February.

With January and February figures also down from last year, first quarter arrivals plunged 13.7 percent year-on-year to around two million.

Increases in the number of visitors from traditional markets like Japan and South Korea failed to make up for the 40.4 percent drop in arrivals from China, the major market.

Travel agencies said customers from China and other Chinese-speaking places have not come back since the tensions last summer, when China’s deployment of an oil rig in the East Sea ignited widespread anti-Chinese sentiment.

There were also 11.1 percent fewer tourists from Europe, mostly due to the 27.1 percent fall in Russian visitor numbers due to the fall in the ruble.

Figures from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism show that foreign arrival numbers have been down year-on-year every month since June 2014.

Tourism firms said external reasons are making it harder to do business, which is already troubled by poor promotion, inconvenient transportation, lack of new destinations and complicated visa procedures.

Vo Anh Tai, general director of Saigontourist, told Saigon Times Online that all the disadvantages are making Vietnam much less attractive than emerging destinations in the region like Myanmar.

Hoang Thi Phong Thu, chairwoman of Anh Duong Company which brings the largest number of Russian tourists to Vietnam, said the government should step in to help wherever it can.

Russian tourists are going increasingly to Egypt since the government there pays for fuel for their charter flights, she said.

Vietnam could make a similar offer to deal with the situation, she said.

“Even though people have less money, they still want to travel and will buy if we have good prices.”
